Half Day Craft Villages Around Hue

Thanh Toan Bridge – Thanh Tien & Sinh Villages

Itinerary

Depart your hotel with your local guide. First by car to visit Thanh Toan. Built two centuries ago, the tile – roofed bridge of Thanh Toan is unique that only two exist in Vietnam (the other being in Hoi An). Built as a tribute to the villagers by the wife of a high ranking Mandarin, the bridge was as a shelter for the disadvantage people in the winter days in the past and has survived storms, floods and wars. Next to the bridge is the village’s morning market which can be explored if you desire.

Continue by road further into the countryside outside Hue City. Your destination is the small village of Thanh Tien which was traditionally the place where local craftsmen produced paper flowers, with techniques that had been passed down through generations for hundreds of years. The flowers are used in religious services and as offerings in traditional occasions including the Tet Lunar New Year festival.

A short distance away, the traditional woodblock printing village of Sinh lies along the lower section of the Perfume River overlooking temples and pagodas. The colorful prints are generally used around the Lunar New Year period as burning effigies for ancestor worship. Visit family homes in the village where this craft has been handed down for generations and get a chance to meet the artisans and learn more on their age-old techniques.
